New year offers hope despite world turmoil

As The Amarillo Independent turns the page for a new calendar year, and as it approaches the end of its second year of publication, we wish the community and our readers a Happy New Year.

We hope for a prosperous and fulfilling year, even though it's one fraught with danger on the world stage and one burdened with an upcoming national election in this country.

No matter what your political persuasion, the candidates for president make for a flawed flock of career politicians. We can only hope for the best with the 2008 election.

We will let other outlets cover the national scene. We focus on bringing you the local news.

We're doing so with a veteran staff for whom we can never be grateful enough and with interns for whom we cannot have enough enthusiasm.

We are also enthusiastic about some surprises for you, our readers.

Beginning with this issue, the calendar page gains a new sponsor — Amarillo National Bank. We welcome this support and thank the bank for our efforts at local journalism.

And next week, thanks to Front Page Communications, the Independent will have a new look — cleaner, bolder and more readable.

The logo at the top of the paper, called the flag, will be a new presentation on our eagle theme.

Headlines will be more prominent, with a bold san serif type impossible to overlook. The text of the stories will be in a slightly larger type, too — easier to read and giving the paper a cleaner look. The design of the pages will be brighter and more attractive. In short, it's a great way to start a new year.

We welcome comments on our new look.

Thanks for reading the Independent and appreciating that Amarillo has another voice.
