PowerADE Personal Best Athlete Zach Shafer Austin Middle School 8th-grader Zach Shafer knows how to set goals and is willing to stretch to reach them.
Stretching might come naturally to Zach. He boasts that he wears a size 111ž2 shoe and is confident his 5'7" frame will grow to well over six feet, but for now it's good enough to earn him a spot as power forward on the Silver Squad of the Austin basketball team. His love of sports began in elementary school. He played hoops through Kids Inc. and YMCA teams before earning a spot on the Austin Gold Squad as a 7th-grader. He also played football with Kids Inc. and with the West Texas Youth Football League. Zach was on the field last fall as a fullback and linebacker for Austin. Zach also participates in track and holds a red-tip belt in TaeKwonDo. He's earned several medals, including a Bronze from the state TKD tournament. Austin Coach Curt O'Hair said, "Zach always does what you ask of him. He's polite, possesses a great attitude and works hard." Zach also stretches his mind. He's enrolled in Pre-AP classes in math and social studies and works hard to make the A-B honor roll. He especially enjoys history and art. Zach is a junior lifeguard and served as a junior counselor for the YMCA last summer. He currently works on a community-wide youth planning committee for the Y. Setting goals and stretching to achieve them are part of every formula for success. Congratulations to Zach, as the Independent's PowerADE Personal Best Athlete.
