Letters to the Editor
Nude piece not pornographic Dear Editor, During the planning and preparation stages for The 806 Group Nude Show, we anticipated (and desired, as part of any art opening we hold) to hear people's different points of view with respect to the artists' media used, artistic quality and personal interpretations of the work displayed. This includes any work, specifically Mardy Lemmons' piece, that made the cover of The Amarillo Independent. We have received an enormous amount of response — both negative and appreciative of the pieces used. The criticisms we received varied in nature. However, no criticism went so far as to absurdly label any piece pornographic. While we value the right to personal opinion and the privilege to express those opinions freely, we must take issue with Mr. Spence's allegation that "common decency and a bit of morality" should have been applied to the placement of the photo on the front page. We would hardly expect to find the photo on the cover of a Pat Robertson publication, but at the same time, one must ask, when would a liberal-leaning publication shun the celebration of the nude human form? The human condition is awash in the truly amoral violence, mistrust and uncertainty of the day. The publication of such a controversial photo of us in our most natural state should be applauded, not judged based purely on questionable ethics. Bailey Londagin Seewald rant unbalanced, too far left
Dear Editor, While I have always felt that the Indy had a little lean to the left of center, I've always been pleased that it didn't go extreme and it presented a fair and pretty balanced view of local events. Since I tilt more to the right side of things I've enjoyed reading Kathie's and George's columns. But I will express some misgivings about George's sub on Feb. 7. I was having a lot of difficulty holding the paper level while I read it. As I read William's whining rant I understood why. This edition was so to the left it was hard to hold it objectively level. Besides that, I know he's probably a very fine and intelligent man, and while I didn't just fall off the turnip truck, I had to go to my Webster 10 times to try and figure out whether his choice of words was positive or negative. I guess "we mere citizens" don't always understand them there big words. Hurry back, George. Don Spence E-mail
