PGCD Pickens pulls out of race for water board WHITE DEER — Boone Pickens has pulled out of the race for a position on the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District and endorsed his opponent. On Monday, the last day to file for a place on the water district's board of directors, the water district received a letter from the Dallas businessman and Roberts County rancher withdrawing his name from the race to represent Roberts County on the board. In the letter, Pickens said he had filed for the position in an effort to ensure that his and his neighbors' water rights would be protected. "My stated objective," Pickens wrote, "was to work hard to ensure that all those with water rights are treated fairly and uniformly." He said that even though he was withdrawing from the race, that remained a priority for him. "When I filed for the PGCD board position," he wrote, "I was unaware that Steve Hale had an interest in serving and had, in fact already filed. I have known Steve for years, and I am sure he will do a good job for the county. My time can be better spent on other projects." Hale is the only person who has filed for the seat on the board to represent Roberts County. Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District officials said Monday was the last day to file for the May election, although write-in candidates have another five days. With Pickens withdrawing from the race and no other board member facing a challenge, water district officials said there would be no need for the election in May. E-mail
